This unit has specifically been aligned to the Australian Science Curriculum year one. In the unit ‘Below Our Feet’ the ground and the area below is explored. Students engage in enquiry based learning by exploring features of the ground including collecting soil samples, sorting and classifying natural materials and looking at leaf litter and the vertebrate and invertebrate populations that it might support. Students develop understandings about the ground and its features and about their own dependence on the ground for many of their needs.

Queensland Minerals and Energy Academy (QMEA), Wandoan State School and Xstrata Coal are acknowledged for their support in the development of this resource. This unit is part of a series that has been developed for the Wandoan Earth Science Centre of Excellence (WESCEX).
